Chelsea have agreed a £37m deal to sign Ajax defender Jorrel Hato, subject to clearance by the Dutch club's supervisory board – and it is a signing that makes sense for the dynamics of Chelsea's bloated squad.

Chelsea and Ajax have reached an agreement over the signing of Jorrel Hato for a fee in excess of €40million plus a sell-on clause, subject to approval from the Dutch club’s supervisory board. The 19-year-old Netherlands international has agreed a seven-year deal and will travel for a medical after approval has been given.

Chelsea were always expected to move the Under-21 midfielder on this summer, either through a permanent transfer or a loan exit. Castledine is keen for regular game time at senior
