In a statement responding to Saturday protests, Mayor Keith Wilson pledged that Portland police will uphold the law in the city, but will “not be used as agents of ICE.”
“Portland has not requested and does not require the intervention of the National Guard,” Wilson said in the statement. He noted that National Guard members and U.S. Marines deployed to Los Angeles under the order of helping ICE and protest management have only inflamed tensions in that city.
Hundreds of protesters have gathered outside of the Portland U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement building after a “No Kings” march in the downtown and Central Eastside area brought tens of thousands of demonstrators on Saturday afternoon.
