Flash flooding caused by torrential rains killed six people in northern West Virginia and rescue crews were searching for two other people who were missing on June 16, 2025 as authorities assessed damage to roads,
Wheeling Fire Department Public Informational Officer Philip Stahl said on the MetroNews Morning News Monday the effort to find those still missing would focus on Big Wheeling Creek within the city on Monday. He said the two dozen vehicles washed away in the floodwaters will be checked.
At least five people are confirmed dead and several more are missing as a result of powerful rains and flash flooding that struck Wheeling, W.Va., Saturday. Flood waters came quickly Saturday night, stranding some cars and sending others careening down creeks.
A state of emergency was declared for Ohio County on Sunday following severe flooding in the area that has so far claimed the lives of three people.
“Flash flooding occurred in the City of Wheeling and in Ohio County last night,” the Wheeling-OhioCounty EMA said in a Facebook post. “There is extensive damage to roads and bridges. Many roads are closed. People have lost their homes from this flooding.”

While the last of the flood warnings for Northern WV have expired, the damage is done in towns like Wheeling where in Ohio County a rare flood emergency was declared during the night. Several people are missing in the flood waters.
At 12:11 a.m. on Sunday, the National Weather Service issued an updated flash flood warning for Allegheny and Washington counties.
