Blink and you’ll miss it, the International Space Station (ISS) travels a blistering 17,500 miles per hour, circling the planet every 90 minutes. It’s the largest spacecraft ever built, roughly the size of an American football field, and a symbol of cooperation between nations whose goals and ideals don’t always align.

The International Space Station is marking 25 years of nonstop human presence in orbit. Nearly 300 people have lived aboard the scientific outpost.

The ISS has “come into its own as a very sophisticated scientific laboratory,” says retired NASA astronaut Scott Kelly, who famously spent a year in space aboard the station in 2015 and 2016.
