SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — Leading Democrats and advocates for homeless people are criticizing an executive order President Donald Trump signed this week aimed at removing people from the streets, possibly by committing them for mental health or drug treatment without their consent.

President Trump signed an executive order pushing a policy of encouraging civil commitment of mentally ill homeless people, requiring treatment for drug addiction and enforcing anti-camping laws. It also offers financial help for cities that do.

The president wants to upend two other core tenants of California’s homelessness response: housing and harm reduction.
