PISCATAWAY, N.J. | Penn State somehow escaped Rutgers with its most labor-intensive win of the season, a 40-36 victory that required another career game from Kaytron Allen, a fourth-down stop and critical holding penalty and the most Rutgers of fumbles.

Kaytron Allen ran for a career-high 226 yards and a touchdown as Penn State beat Rutgers 40-36 for the 18th straight time to become bowl eligible after a tumultuous season.

It looked like this one could be different. When Rutgers scored effortlessly on its opening drive. When it answered each Penn State score with its own, trading blows in a game that saw five lead changes and three ties.

The Nittany Lions defeated Rutgers, 40-36, in a wild shootout to secure their sixth win and earn a bid to a postseason game. They also eliminated Rutgers from bowl contention by handing the Scarlet Knights their seventh loss.

Singleton returned the ensuing kickoff 42 yards, but it was called back because of a holding penalty. Undeterred, he ripped off a 53-yard run to set up Allen’s 16-yard TD that made it 21-14 on the first play of the second quarter.

Nick Singleton broke Saquon Barkley’s record for career rushing touchdowns by scoring his 44th in the first quarter of Saturday’s 2025 regular-season finale at Rutgers. He also broke Barkley’s mark for career all-purpose touchdowns, which includes receiving and kick return scores. The score was Singleton’s 54th total touchdown.
