US Coast Guard frees ships during icebreaking operations from New York Harbor to Great Lakes
The U.S. Coast Guard is actively conducting icebreaking operations around the Northern Tier of the U.S. to help vessels maneuver through the frozen, icy waters caused by the prolonged extreme cold and powerful winter storms.
Bone-chilling winter temperatures are causing concern for vessels in the water, and the U.S. Coast Guard has jumped in to help with icebreaking operations.

US Coast Guard urges ‘extreme caution’ due to ice in Ohio River
Unusually icy conditions on the Ohio River prompted the US Coast Guard to issue safety warnings to river traffic and to the public.
A U.S. Coast Guard icebreaker assisted an Antarctica cruise ship after shifting pack ice slowed its voyage, allowing it to safely reach open water.
