Liverpool are closing in on the signing of Bayer Leverkusen and Germany star Florian Wirtz, who has had a reputation for being fiercely ambitious from a young age

Florian Wirtz has officially become the most expensive signing in Premier League history after Liverpool secured the 22-year-old German midfielder from Bayer Leverkusen for a staggering €150 million.

Liverpool’s continued engagement with Leverkusen over recent weeks has also coincided with major changes at the German club. Head coach Xabi Alonso has taken over at Real Madrid, replacing Carlo Ancelotti. Former Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has been appointed to lead Leverkusen through the next phase of their development.

A few days before the Devers trade, it was reported that Liverpool is signing Florian Wirtz to a club-record deal in the Premier League. The connection there, of course, is that Fenway Sports Group owns both the Reds Sox and Liverpool F.C.

Liverpool have agreed a deal to sign Florian Wirtz from Bayer Leverkusen for an initial $135 million, according to CBS Sports sources. The agreement to sign the German international could ultimately break the British transfer record set by Chelsea when they signed Enzo Fernandez from Benfica for just short of $145 million.
