BRUSSELS (AP) — European leaders have praised President Donald Trump for agreeing to allow vital U.S. backup for a force they are mustering to police any future peace in Ukraine — a move that vastly improves the chances of an operation that could prove essential for the country’s security.

EU leaders said Ukraine must be at an upcoming U.S.-Russia summit on ending the war and urged President Trump not to bargain with European security interests.

U.S. President Donald Trump says there will be “very severe consequences” if Russian President Vladimir Putin doesn’t agree to stop his war in Ukraine after their Friday summit in Alaska
