The American Civil Liberties Union of West Virginia is suing to stop West Virginia Governor Patrick Morrisey's order to deploy the state's National Guard to D.C.

The lawsuit contends that the deployment is an unprecedented political act, not a response to a genuine emergency and violates West Virginia law that outlines specific, limited circumstances for out-of-state Guard deployments.

Governor Patrick Morrisey said in Saturday's statement: "West Virginia is proud to stand with President Trump in his effort to restore pride and beauty to our nation's capital. The men and women of our National Guard represent the best of our state, and this mission reflects our shared commitment to a strong and secure America."

Hundreds of West Virginia National Guard members will be deployed across the nation’s capital as part of the Trump administration’s effort to overhaul policing in the District of Columbia through a federal crackdown on crime and homelessness.

Members of the West Virginia National Guard and those from other states arrived in Washington, D.C. as part of Trump’s initiative to ‘Make D.C. Safe and Beautiful.’

Morrisey was one of several red-state governors to send National Guard troops to the capital to supplement Trump's crackdown on crime.

The moves come as federal agents and National Guard troops have begun to appear across the heavily Democratic city after President Trump's executive order earlier this week.
