As the Texas Legislature plans to redraw congressional maps, the governors of California and Illinois may devise new borders before the 2026 elections.

Two groups of Democrats left Texas to meet with Govs. Gavin Newsom and JB Pritzker, who have suggested their Democratic-controlled states could counter a Texas Republican gerrymander.

A federal judge threw out the Trump administration's lawsuit against Illinois, Cook County and Chicago sanctuary policies that ban assisting in immigration-related matters.

The ruling is a setback for Trump, the first defeat in a series of similar lawsuits the Justice Department filed against states and cities that have adopted sanctuary policies that limit their employees’ cooperation with federal immigration enforcement. Other suits have been filed against cities in California, New Jersey and New York.

U.S. District Court Judge Lindsay C. Jenkins for the Northern District of Illinois Eastern Division said the Trump administration “lacks standing” to invalidate the state, city and county laws that limit cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.
