A Rhode Island man accused of faking his death and fleeing the United States to evade rape charges was found guilty Wednesday of sexually assaulting a former girlfriend in his first of two Utah trials.

Alahverdian, also known as Nicholas Rossi, famously faked his own death in 2020 and fled the country, before being extradited back to the U.S. from Scotland last year. The trial lasted only three days. The rape reportedly occurred in 2008, after he met a woman on Craigslist and the pair became engaged in just a few weeks.
