Apsara dance didn’t begin in Thailand, it’s Khmer, born almost 1,000 years ago at Angkor Wat, the world’s largest religious monument (1.6 million m², with over 1,500 Apsara carvings). Thailand adapted it later, but schools rarely mention the Khmer roots — the Angkor Wat–sized elephant in the room. In 2003, UNESCO recognized Cambodia’s Royal Ballet, including Apsara, as Intangible Cultural Heritage. For Cambodians, it’s more than art, it’s identity.
