Today is #WorldWildlifeDay, a moment to celebrate the extraordinary wildlife that makes Australia one of the most biologically rich places on earth. Across our sanctuaries, partnerships, and field programs, AWC ecologists, land managers and Indigenous rangers are working every day to protect threatened species, restore habitats and bring wildlife back from the brink. From the tropical savannas of the north to the deserts of Central Australia, this work is helping secure a future for some of the

Australian wildlife really packs a punch 👊. Don't be fooled by the cute and fluffy reputation. Like many small Australian mammals, Quenda (Southern Brown Bandicoot) can be feisty 🥊. According to AWC Field Ecologist, Nicola Palmer, this is normal behaviour for males: “It’s not unusual for us to catch them with wounds on their back or missing an eye/ear/tail. But this was the first time I’ve ever seen it happen!” 🎥 N Palmer / AWC at Karakamia Wildlife Sanctuary | Australian Wildlife Conservancy

30 years ago, our wildlife translocation program commenced at Karakamia Wildlife Sanctuary (WA), about an hour east of Perth, with the release of the Brush-tailed Bettong, Brushtail Possum, and Southern Brown Bandicoot. Since then, the translocation program has expanded considerably, seeing 53 populations of 23 mammal species established. Of these species, 16 are nationally listed as threatened, 18 are highly or extremely vulnerable to cat and/or fox predation, and 16 are both threatened and vul

Introducing ‘AWC in Conversation’! We're excited to share a new initiative to connect you directly with our sanctuaries and help you keep up to date with our team in the field. Each Wednesday we'll share a previous Conversation with a member of the AWC family, discussing our projects in-depth to explore what effective conservation looks like on the ground. In this first Conversation we speak with AWC Senior Wildlife Ecologist, Dr Eridani Mulder, about our various bushfire recovery projects. Erid

After several years of drought in western NSW, Scotia Wildlife Sanctuary has finally received some rain in recent months, which has triggered a flurry of wildflowers and birdlife. Wildlife Ecologist Tali Moyle and Sanctuary Manager Hamish Longbottom gave an update from the sanctuary, which is the site of one of AWC's longest running mammal reintroduction projects. www.australianwildlife.org/awc-in-conversation | Australian Wildlife Conservancy

From rare wildlife sightings to major species recovery wins, 2025 has been a landmark year for AWC. This year we launched our new 10-year strategy, a bold vision to scale conservation across Australia and protect more of our wildlife than ever before. Alongside this, our teams recorded extraordinary scientific discoveries, celebrated breeding successes, expanded safe havens, strengthened partnerships, and continued proving that with determination and science-led action, we can reverse the declin

📣 We’ve officially expanded our footprint in NSW, acquiring Mongo Valley Wildlife Sanctuary in the Northern Rivers. The sanctuary is home to one of the state’s rarest marsupials, the Brush-tailed Rock-wallaby. Located near Casino, on Bundjalung Country, the 1,260-hectare sanctuary spans eucalypt forest, sandstone escarpments and pockets of critically endangered lowland rainforest. It's predicted to support more than 250 native vertebrate species, including Koalas and the threatened Kate’s Leaf-

Playtime, exploring… then a well-earned nap in the sun 🥹☀️ Numbat joeys spend around six months with their mum, clinging to her belly before graduating to independent adventures. Each litter usually includes up to four joeys — tiny, stripy bundles learning the art of being a numbat. Safe to say, growing up is tiring work. 🎥 B Leue/AWC | Australian Wildlife Conservancy

Nature is truly our greatest asset. A new report released today has calculated the value of nature to the Australian economy at $511 billion. But as our CEO Tim Allard says, we know it’s worth even more than that. That’s why we’re scaling up our conservation efforts across the country, expanding our reach and ambitions to protect more species and ecosystems. 🎥 J Clarke/AWC | Australian Wildlife Conservancy

During recent surveying for ever-elusive Phascogales in the Kimberley, AWC ecologists instead turned up some adorable Golden-backed Tree-rats. Once so common as to be considered a pest in Broome, these golden-topped natives are now critically endangered in the NT, vulnerable in WA, and their exact numbers are unknown. Presumed extinct from most of their former range across northern Australia, they now only occur here – the remote northwest Kimberley. 🎥 S Shipway / AWC | Australian Wildlife Cons

AWC is helping to restore Australia's endangered Greater Bilby. So far, we have reintoruced Bilbies to 5 feral predator-free areas, which now protect 10-15% of the estimated global Bilby population. This translocation program is set to increase the global Bilby population by up to 40% - or around 5,000 Bilbies.
