This clip shows the California condor's amazing reflexes and agility. The prey-go-neesh (condor) is part of the Northern California Condor Restoration Program (NCCRP) flock. The NCCRP is a partnership between the Yurok Tribe and Redwood National and State Parks (NPS). The Tribe and park released the first birds in 2022. Prior to the reintroduction, the last local observation of a condor occurred in 1892. The bird was killed and placed in a museum. Now, there are 17 free-flying condors in Yurok C

California condors are obligate scavengers, meaning they survive only by finding and feeding on animals that have already died. They don’t hunt. They must go where the food is. Carrion isn’t a predictable food source. Animals don’t always die out in the open—or in safe places. Dead animals may be claimed by other meat eaters hiding in the shadows. The California Condor Cam is back for 2022, focusing on a new nest in Tom's Canyon featuring #462 (male) and #846 (female). Their egg started pipping today, and is expected to hatch in the next 24-48 hours! Watch live at allaboutbirds.org/condors #462 was wild-hatched in 2008 by foster parents, male #247 and female #79 out of a Huttons Bowl nest, the same territory featured in last year's Condor Cam. #462 has nested twice before in 2018 and 2020; both times in Tom's Canyon with previous mate, fe

California Condors are curious and intelligent birds that often play with trash due to its similarity to natural objects they use for play and foraging, such as feathers, sticks, and bone fragments. They may mistake small pieces of trash, like plastic or glass, for sources of calcium, which is essential for their diet, especially for their chicks. This behavior is dangerous, as ingesting these items can lead to fatal impactions in their digestive tracts. Photo & Video credits: S. Sommer, D. Pari

It turns out, condors get around. We made this animated map showing all the GPS tracked daily flights of endangered California condors in the southern California flock from last year. It's truly amazing to visualize their flight patterns. It's hard to tell, but Bitter Creek and Hopper Mountain National Wildlife Refuges are like airports for this flock—there's constant activity going in and out of these areas. Important, too, are the Sisquoc and Sespe Condor Sanctuaries in the Los Padres National

Take an inside look at the decades-long effort to save the California condor! By 1982, only 22 California condors survived in the wild. As of last year, thanks to countless partners teaming up for a breeding program, there were nearly 350 of North America’s largest birds in the wild. At The Peregrine Fund’s World Center for Birds of Prey outside Boise, Idaho, partners have raised more than 300 California condors. “What’s remarkable is that they’re really raising the future of the California cond

Have you ever seen a California condor? They’re North America’s largest land bird and were once completely extinct in the wild. Their main threat has been lead poisoning from bullets found in the animal carcasses these condors consume. Thanks to conservation efforts and a successful captive breeding program, their numbers have increased from 27 to around 565. You can find CA condors in Pinnacles, Big Sur, and Bitter Creek in California. They can also be found in Zion National Park in Utah and Ve
