Meet our Blue Death-Feigning Beetle (Asbolus verrucosus)! This nocturnal beetle is endemic to the desert regions of the Southwestern United States. They are opportunistic feeders and principally consume a variety of plants, as well as carrion, if available. The Blue Death-Feigning Beetle is actually black in color, but gets its blue coloration from a waxy coating that they secrete to protect themselves from the harsh desert sun. When threatened, they roll over onto their backs and become rigid.
