Mini graphite portraits are a super popular and budget friendly way to get a meaningful drawing of your four legged friend! Whether that's your horse, dog, cat, rabbit or any other furry pet! I still put just as much love and details as my larger pieces. They are only forty pounds! Who do you want me to draw? #petportraits #animalart #horsedrawing | Art by Rhia - Artist of the Equines

A few little snippets of my first portrait of Chief one of my horses. Graphite is one of my favourite mediums. Layering to create the variation of hair textures were my favourite parts about this drawing. That and of course seeing his kind expression come together on paper

One of the cutest graphite portraits I've had on the easel 😍. Graphite is such a versatile medium and really helps us to focus on contrast and the importance of highlights and shadows. I used a couple of different blending tools and then began building up my pencil layers to add depth and detail. - - - 8" x 12" graphite drawing Reference photo: Pixabay | Zara's Pet Portraits & Wildlife Art

Drawing 5 Elephants on this scale means that drawing every wrinkle isn't what will make the drawing more realistic. It's the values and contrast. At each stage I have used multiple shading techniques to create a wide variety of midtones but focusing on the lighter highlights and darker shadows is what creates the 3D shape of this Elephant. Drawing on smaller scales like really forces us to refine the key fundamental techniques that are required for other more complex projects. - - - 6" x 14" gra

If the graphite has been applied in the right way, using the right layering process, then highlights and details such as whiskers can be added even over really dark layers of graphite. I'm using a Tombow Mono eraser here to carefully remove the graphite. This is one of my favourite erasers but the success of how effective it is relies on how it is used and the way the graphite has been built up. When the graphite is as dark as it is for this Pug drawing, I prefer to move the eraser slower to giv

Drawing white fur in graphite requires us to capture the variation in shades to ensure that the animal stands out on the white paper. As white fur is never actually white graphite can be a really effective medium for this type of portrait. I've picked a few snippets to show some crucial layers that I use when drawing such a portrait =). My latest graphite drawing has such a lovely range of fur textures. From shorter, shiny fur to longer overlapping fur, this portrait really required a range of pencil and layering techniques. One thing I really focused on for this piece was to ensure that I made the fur dark enough before adding in highlights. If the graphite is applied in the right way, providing the right techniques are used with the erasers, then lighter highlights can be added on top. This is always my preferred way of drawi

Shading graphite can be done by using different tools & techniques. When using the pencils to shade, I prefer to work with a blunt pencil or more of the side of the pencil rather than a sharp point as this can more easily create scribbles and harsh lines. Shading needs to be soft and I find a shaprer pencil makes that much harder and more time consuming. So the point of the pencil can plat a bit role in achieving the desired effect. Other tools such as paper blending stumps can soften any harshe

When drawing lighter coated animals like this horse, it's really important to layer the graphite correctly. I am always a little cautious at the base stage to not go to dark but it's about getting the balance right because if the base layer isn't dark enough the portrait will lack depth. I find it's therefore best to build up the values gradually. - - - 8" x 12" Reference photo: Helena Lopes from Unsplash | Zara's Pet Portraits & Wildlife Art

Through the use of applying the graphite and then removing the graphite with a range of erasers I always aim to build up as much depth as I can in each piece I create. This focuses on two pain aspects. How to draw realistic eyes and then drawing tabby fur. Both very different but each requiring the same approach of lots of layers. Each layer refines the contrast and as that happens the eye takes on a more three dimensional shape. The fur starts to become more realistic and that's because the val

This Deer was really interesting to draw because of the variety of textures. The antlers, the shorter fur on the face and the overlapping lighter hairs of the inner ear all made this a great project to refine drawing skills. It's not just the way we use the pencils but also at what point to incorperate highlights through using the correct erasers. I am always switching between them both to build up as much depth at each layering stage as possible. - - - 10" x 12" Reference photo: Pixabay | Zara'

Another little study focusing on how to draw a dog nose in graphite :D. I like to focus on creating the 3D shape of the nose at the very first layer. This is usually done by mapping in the nostrils and how they begin to curve at the edges. Then I beggin to map in the placement of the main highlights and shadows which really help in creating shape and form. Whether it be noses, feathers or fur, contrast plays a huge role in every single one of my paintings and drawings. - - - 4" x 4" graphite dra

My latest graphtie drawing was all about drawing black fur. Something that can be oen of the hardest fur types to get right in graphite. It's so easy to just jump to a dark 9B pencil early on but this can significantly limit what depth and realism is achieved. I had so much fun drawing this and it's ended up being one of my favourite portraits to date

Long, soft fur relies on building layers gradually but also softening layers as well. This is key in ensuring pencil strokes don't have to much harshness and there are a couple of ways to do this. Using a paper blending stump or an eye make up applicator can work really well but also using light pressure on the pencil will also make a huge difference. | Zara's Pet Portraits & Wildlife Art

Drawing Mabel the Cameleon in graphite was a project that required the use of pretty much every graphite tool I have. Even just this small section here, I have used different erasers and blending techniques depending on what effect needed to be recreated. It's important to get the balance right. Here, on the finger tip I really wanted to maintain the softness because that would ensure focus was not pulled away from Mabel. So the blending and application of the graphite is just as important as us

Delicate details and precise strokes bring this graphite masterpiece to life—a heartwarming portrayal of a paw, symbolizing both innocence and strength. The softness of the fur and the subtle shine on the pads showcase the artist's remarkable ability to capture textures and light with just a pencil. Graphite, as a medium, allows for a nuanced play of shadows and highlights, creating a sense of realism that's both striking and tender. This artwork not only celebrates technical excellence but also
