Once inland, Helene will be pulled the northwest, rotating around an upper low over Arkansas. This is known as the "Fujiwhara effect", which is pretty unusual at this latitude. The tropical system and the upper low will basically rotate around each other. Scroll down for my long post with details about the tropical situation. | James Spann

Fascinating. Elongated jet dives south, captures #Helene, cuts off into a stalled upper level low, then both systems slingshot each other - #Fujiwhara -and Helene is pulled NW into the Ohio Valley. But the cut off, “cuts off” any cooler/ drier air from reaching Florida :(@WFLA | WFLA Jeff Berardelli

Fujiwhara?? When two hurricanes interact, they can sometimes pivot around one another. Next week there will likely be 2 tropical cyclones (perhaps 2 hurricanes) offshore. If they are strong enough, and are close enough, a #Fujiwhara may happen. Here’s how it works. Between the 2 storms is a pivot point (sort of like a fulcrum on a seesaw), it happens to be near where the sinking/ driest air is. If conditions are right we may see them pivot, or if one’s stronger (Bermuda hurricane) its force will

Two storms, Imelda and Humberto, may interact, causing one to absorb the other. The Fujiwhara effect describes how storms rotate around a common center, potentially altering their paths and intensity. Meteorologists explain the dynamics of storm interaction. John Bernier and I discuss this possibilty. https://www.wric.com/livestreams/weather-university-i-storms-special-guest-john-bernier/ #8News #RVA #FujiwharaEffect #StormInteraction #Meteorology #WeatherPatterns #Imelda #Humberto | Matt DiNard

FUJIWHARA EFFECT: Can two hurricanes combine to create a super hurricane? Thankfully no! How they interact or "dance" is called the rare #Fujiwhara effect. There's a lot of buzz recently on social media about it because of the possibility between Humberto and potential Imelda. Here's a greater explainer what happens when two storms get close to one another! | Matt Devitt WINK Weather

It’s called the Fujiwhara effect after a Japanese meteorologist, Dr. Sakuhei Fujiwhara, who first described it in 1921. It’s a fascinating interaction between two nearby tropical cyclones (or other vortices like low-pressure systems). Here’s how it works: The Basics When two tropical cyclones form close enough to each other (usually within about 800–900 miles), their circulations begin to interact. Instead of moving independently, they start to rotate, or orbit, around a common center point betw

What is the Fujiwhara Effect? Could it happen of the U.S. East Coast next week? Yes. It’s possible. Newly upgraded #Humberto and Invest 94L in the Southwest Atlantic now with a HIGH chance of development into #Imelda over the next 7 days. Something to monitor closely in the Bahamas, Turks & Caicos, & U.S. east coast. This setup is wonky, and the two system’s close proximity to one another could cause erroneous scenarios/paths as the system’s ‘dance’ around one another. Lots to figure out regardi

It's just absolutely amazing to see the #fujiwhara take place in the Atlantic tropical basin between #imelda and #Humberto! It does look as though their interaction is creating a shearing effect on each other in this loop! #weshwx | Tony Mainolfi, WESH
