I love finding these!!! These bells are named for the old Conestoga wagons that were used to haul goods in the 1700s. The bells continued to be used long after other carts took over and were mounted on wire loops or leather straps. The roads were usually narrow and the sound of the bells alerted pedestrians that a cart or wagon was coming so they could move out of the way. Bell metal is fairly brittle so these are often found broken, but a fully intact one like this is quite a treat to dig up! #
